GMC SIERRA VS. FORD F-150: A PRACTICAL COMPARISON
The GMC Sierra 1500 and Ford F-150 are two of the most capable and recognizable full-size trucks sold in Indiana. Both offer several engines, cab and bed configurations, four-wheel drive and the equipment necessary for serious towing. This is not a comparison between one capable truck and one incapable truck.
The important differences involve how the trucks produce their power, how much usable cargo space they provide and which available features make towing or everyday use easier. The Sierra offers more standard engine torque, greater cargo-box volume, an available diesel engine and several GMC-specific trailering features that are not available on the F-150.
Curry Buick GMC sells and services the Sierra 1500 at our shared Curry Auto Center campus in Bloomington, Indiana. Our team can help compare actual trucks by engine, cab, bed length, trim and trailering equipment-not simply by the largest number advertised for the model.
WHERE SIERRA WINS - AND WHERE THE F-150 REMAINS COMPETITIVE
The F-150 remains a legitimate choice for full-size truck buyers. It offers a broad engine lineup, an available hybrid powertrain and a maximum towing rating that slightly exceeds the Sierra 1500's maximum when both trucks are configured specifically for that purpose.
The Sierra takes a different approach. Its standard engine produces more torque, its available Duramax engine gives buyers a diesel option that Ford no longer offers in the F-150, and its cargo box provides more volume in the short-, standard- and long-bed configurations compared by GMC.
For most buyers, a difference of a few hundred pounds in an advertised maximum towing rating will not decide the purchase. Engine preference, actual truck configuration, bed space, daily comfort and trailering technology are more likely to matter. The right comparison is between the two trucks you would realistically purchase-not between two specially configured maximum-capacity models.

CARGO SPACE IS MORE THAN A BED-LENGTH MEASUREMENT
Bed length does not tell the entire cargo story. In GMC's comparison, the Sierra provides more cargo-box volume than the F-150 with the short, standard and long beds. The Sierra's available MultiPro Tailgate also provides six positions designed for bed access, loading and work-site use.
Ford offers its own tailgate features, including the available Pro Access Tailgate. The two designs work differently. Ford's design provides a swing-out center door, while GMC's MultiPro design uses a primary gate and inner gate that can be arranged as a step, work surface, load stop or conventional tailgate.
We recommend operating both designs before deciding which one is more useful. At Curry Buick GMC, we can demonstrate each MultiPro position and explain which Sierra bed and cab combinations are available with the equipment a customer wants.
SIERRA 1500 STILL OFFERS THE DURAMAX® 3.0L TURBO-DIESEL ENGINE
Ford no longer offers a diesel engine in the F-150. 11 GMC continues to offer the Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel in the Sierra 1500. It produces 305 horsepower and 495 lb.-ft. of torque and allows a properly configured Sierra 1500 to tow up to 13,300 pounds. 12
The Duramax will not be the best engine for every buyer. It is most likely to appeal to someone who regularly tows, drives substantial highway mileage or prefers the low-speed torque and operating characteristics of a diesel. Buyers with shorter commutes or lighter workloads may be better served by the TurboMax engine or one of the Sierra's available V8 engines.
This is one of the clearest differences between the two trucks. The F-150 offers more gasoline and hybrid powertrain combinations, while the Sierra gives the customer the choice of a turbocharged gasoline engine, two V8 engines or a diesel.
FRONT AND REAR ELECTRONIC LOCKING DIFFERENTIALS
Available front and rear electronic locking differentials, a combination not offered on any competitor in its class, 13 assure both wheels will spin together to help keep traction in off-road situations where one wheel is off the ground or on a low-traction surface.
COMPARE THE TRUCKS USING THE WORK YOU ACTUALLY DO
A truck should be selected around its intended use. Before comparing individual vehicles, determine what the truck will regularly carry, whether it will tow, how many passengers it needs to accommodate and whether it will spend most of its time in Bloomington traffic, on the highway or at a job site.
Maximum towing ratings apply only to specific configurations. Engine, drivetrain, cab, bed length, axle ratio, wheels, optional equipment, passengers and cargo can all affect the capacity of an individual truck. A Sierra with the wrong equipment may not meet a buyer's needs simply because another version of the Sierra can tow 13,300 pounds.
If you are purchasing a truck for a camper, equipment trailer, boat or commercial use, bring us the trailer's loaded weight, tongue weight and any other known requirements. Curry Buick GMC can help identify Sierra 1500 configurations equipped for that particular use.
Curry Buick GMC is located on the campus of Curry Auto Center at 2906 East Buick Cadillac Boulevard in Bloomington, Indiana. We serve truck buyers from Bloomington, Bedford, Spencer, Martinsville, Columbus and surrounding communities.
